L’Île-des-Sœurs, November 7, 2023 – Recent news regarding the actions of certain real estate brokers in Quebec needs to be clarified. First, let us point out that the Quebec Professional Association of Real Estate Brokers (QPAREB) deplores all reprehensible behaviours and actions which do great harm to the image of the profession.

Quebec is the most regulated province in Canada as regards the practice of real estate brokerage. The real estate activities of brokers must respect the provisions of the Real Estate Brokerage Act and oversight is ensured by the government regulator, the Organisme d’autoréglementation du courtage immobilier du Québec. This framework ensures the protection of the public as well as the quality of services provided by real estate professionals in Quebec. Furthermore, real estate brokers have professional liability insurance for the purpose of protecting their clients.

The few cases recently reported on in the media constitute exceptions compared to the quality and professional work carried out every day by some 14,000 Quebec real estate brokers. Moreover, brokers work every day in the interests of their clients by supporting and guiding them during the most important sale or purchase of their lives.

Every year, the vast majority of consumers choose to work with a real estate broker, which represents nearly 100,000 real estate transactions across the province. In 2023, almost all consumers declared themselves satisfied or very satisfied with the work of their broker according to a Léger satisfaction survey commissioned by the QPAREB.
